Nationally, the ASPCA and the Humane Society are the two biggies. On line there are sites like PetFinders.com. Pet supply stores like PetSmart and PetCo also provide facilities for rescued cats and allow local rescue groups to bring adoptable animals in to meet prospective pet-parents.

Every community has local groups who foster rescued animals in their homes until they can be adopted. They are usually featured in the local paper, and are listed on PetFinders.com. Many private kennels give discounts to rescue groups and offer basic assistance rehabilitating dogs with issues.

There are breed-rescue groups too, for just about every breed of dog and cat. In particular, Grey Hound rescue groups work to make sure dogs off the tracks have a pleasant retirement.

Finally, there are fans of just about every other wild and domestic animal imaginable, who run one-man rescue and support groups or major shelters. Birds of Prey especially have rescue groups in just about every State.

Google "animal of choice" rescue for the specific animal you want to help. Just remember that most if not all rescue groups are on very limited budgets and are overwhelmed with animals that need help, so you may not get an immediate response and you may be asked for support.
