The red wolf, Canis Rufus. Around 110 roam the eastern North Carolina swamplands of the Alligator River Refuge. This wolf once ranged from Maine to Texas. Considered functionally extinct since 1980, the last 14 wild wolves were captured and put into a captive breeding program. Release of eight wolves in NC in 1987 was a successful venture.
