The issue is not the extinction of a particular species. Though pandas are in fact, cute animals, the danger reflects a broader damage that humans are inflicting on the environment.

Additional Information: The Giant Panda is a barometer for the entire ecosystem of the Yangtze Basin. They are competing directly with the growing needs of humanity for all the Natural Resources in that region. Their habitat is in the heart of China, both economically and geographically. This area is full of both rare and highly diverse plant, and animal species, ranging across the endangered status spectrum. When any species becomes extinct that ecosystem has to adjust through out the food chain, and cycles. But if a large species, that consumes huge amounts of food to survive, were to become extinct. Other species, big and small would suffer from the missing link in the ecosystem. The Giant Panda is a large link in this region, and in this environment, many species would be adversely effected if it were to become extinct. Also the Giant Panda is a well known, popular species, with lots of research already completed, and breeding plans developed. This is one of those species that can help the region it inhabits, simply by living in the wild, and producing a healthy growing population. The Giant Panda can bring in tourism trade, that would include managed growth, and further economic benefits for the people living in the region. Ultimately a healthy Giant Panda population can contribute to the overall welfare of the all the species in the region. Helping to provide the Chinese population with an alternative to their current lifestyles for future generations. If the Giant Panda wild population didn't recover, the loss would be much more than the loss of one species. It would be the loss of an international effort and idea that unified people, countries, and governments. The Giant Panda represents what most people long to believe, is the good in us all.
