Yes and no.

There used to be a hobby kit with all the materials (ceramic tube electric furnace, one bare silicon wafer, dopant chemicals, metal plating chemicals, wafer scoring scribe, wire, and chemical trays) and instructions to make 8 small silicon photovoltaic cells. But it has been out of production for more than 25 years.

It would be very difficult (but not completely impossible) to replicate something similar to this kit and make your own photovoltaic cells now, but certain materials would probably need to be purchased in prohibitively large quantity for an individual.

How does the photovoltaic cell work?

Photovoltaic energy is the conversion of sunlight into electricity. A photovoltaic cell, commonly called a solar cell or PV, is the technology used to convert solar energy directly into electrical power. A photovoltaic cell is a nonmechanical device usually made from silicon alloys. When light strikes these silicon alloys, it frees electrons which can be collected onto attached conductive plates.

What is the term for a type of cell that converts the suns energy into eletrical energy by releasing electrons from silicon?

The term for the type of cell that converts the sun's energy into electrical energy by releasing electrons from silicon is a "solar cell" or "photovoltaic cell." These cells utilize the photovoltaic effect to generate electricity when exposed to sunlight.

How is the power output of a photovoltaic cell affected by clouds and by dirt and other solid pollutants?

Well, a Photovoltaic cell is a solar cell, and it is affected by clouds and solid pollutants because they block light from hitting the solar cell.

What does a photovoltaic cell do?

A photovoltaic cell converts sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect, where photons from the sunlight knock loose electrons in the cell's material, creating an electric current. This electricity can be used to power homes, businesses, or devices.
