Not just any sand. Mortar sand. Mortar sand is a larger grain sand that has been washed and screened to remove any rocks or pebbles.
Unfortunately not. You require a 0-4mm sharp sand which can be purchased through most builders merchants. The mix should be approximately 1:4 Cement / Sand ratio. Mix to an earthy consistency and compact well. The cement is the conductor of the heat. Good luck with the project.
Muriatic acid will remove concrete from marble. You can also sand it off. Using a scraper may also help to free it.
The acceptable standard is 4:1 (That is 4 wheelbarrows of sand to TWO bags cement) as the volume of a wheelbarrow is roughly double that of a 50kg bag of cement. Lots of builders get "confused" by this.

The techinique I have used works pretty well but you have to remove the sand pile. 1) Open drain on bottom of filter. 2) Remove top valve assembly. 3) Remove sand screen from drain valve - needle nose pliers work. 4) Fill filter with water - a sand slurry should start from the drain. 5) Use a rod or screwdriver the periodically clear the drain to keep the flow going. 6) Add water and hose down the sand in the filter as needed. 7) Move the sand away from the drain to keep the flow continuous.

There should be a drain plug near the bottom of the filter. Open it and let drain. The sand will stay in.
