Probably not. If you don't use primer, you can scuff the PVC with sandpaper. The primer gets rid of the surface sheen on the PVC and softens the surface just a little bit. A light sanding will do about as much.

Why is cement so strong?

Cement is strong because is it's molecular structure means it links together under tension, but will come apart easily if pulled length-ways.

Why does dry cement mix crumble?

Dry cement mix crumbles primarily due to its composition, which includes fine particles that can easily break apart when not properly hydrated. When mixed with water, the cement particles form chemical bonds that create a solid structure; without this, the mix remains brittle and lacks cohesion. Additionally, exposure to moisture or humidity can lead to clumping or hardening, further contributing to crumbling. Proper storage and mixing are essential to maintain the integrity of dry cement.

Will thin set sick to vinyl backing?

It is possible, but it may not last very long. Some thin-set mortars are unmodified (no polymers added) and will stick to only similar cement-based products or to tile itself - so these likely will not adhere well at all. Some modified thinsets will stick to vinyl cutback adhesive, so check the label. In any case, if you apply a bonding primer to the vinyl backing first, then modified thinset should adhere to the primer- but not without problems. You see, the vinyl backing is likely made up of layers of paper and/or other materials. The weight of tile on a wall could separate the layers and cause the tile to fall off. On a floor, the vinyl backing has too much 'give' and could cause the tiles to crack and grout to break apart and fall out.Best practice is to install cement board or other tile backerboard on top of the vinyl backing, and then install tile to the backer.
