The term "innovations in the fashion industry" means anything new or different. It has a double edged meaning. There are innovations in the way clothing is sewn together, such as the various machines that not only sew, but trim as well. There are fabric treatments which can retard fire, soil and bug/insect damage. The other meaning of fashion innovation is what we see and wear -- the styles that are apt to become classics. For example, the Bikini swim suit. This two piecer was truly an innovation on the beach. Other examples were/are the Pillbox hats, the Channel jacket, and the Windsor knot for men's ties.

Is fashion school needed to succeed?

I've heard some success stories about people who have great careers in the fashion industry and didn't attend fashion college but just think how much easier it would be to launch your career with an education from a fashion college! Not to mention all the networking that you could do and collaborate with other people who are also fashion enthusiast's! I have friends who graduated from FIDM and they told me that the school really helped them to guide them in the right direction with their careers and taught them the right information to help them succeed in the fashion industry. So to answer your question, I would say attend a fashion college because the benefits are HUGE!
