There are 3 most commonly used methods of starting single-phase AC induction motors: Shaded Pole: This method is commonly used on small AC induction motors, like might be found in an ice cream freezer or electric fan. In a Capacitor Start motor, a second coil offset somewhat from the main coil, is connected in series with a capacitor to cause a phase shift. This provides a starting torque for the rotor stronger than the shaded-pole motor and also more efficiently, but still interferes with overall motor efficiency and causes extra heating once the rotor is up to speed. "Split-phase" or Switch Phase: This method is commonly used on motors that require a great deal of starting torque, like many washing machines and some dryers. So-called "Split-phase" motors use a more powerful offset coil and capacitor combination that is turned on and off by a centrifugal switch controlled by the rotor speed. When the motor is stopped or turning slowly, the centrifugal switch engages the start winding and provides maximum torque for starting the motor. When the rotor speed increases, the start winding is disengaged by the centrifugal switch, and this leaves the motor spinning on the main coil only. This increases motor efficiency by leaving the start winding off during the motor run time and reduces motor heating.
It depends on both the wiring of the motor and what if any residual magnetic field remains in the field windings. If there is some residual field, you will get some volts, but not many. If the motor has permanent magnets, it is effectively a dynamo.
Reversing polarity is not possible with an ac motor. Some do have wiring that will allow you to change rotation. The type and model of the motor can tell you if it is reversible.

I dont think you can increase the speed of the motor but if the motor is driving some piece of rotating equipment (pump etc) the speed of the driven shaft can be increased up to the point where the motor reaches full load current.

When the flux in the main part of the stator increases, the flux through the copper ring with have a small delay, since it wants to keep its flux constant. Therefor you get a small rotational component to the field distribution, which makes the rotor turn.

An AC motor relies on an alternating waveform supplied to it. As the rotor is moved by the magnetic field produced by the current, it aligns itself ready for an opposite polarity in order to continue in the same direction. There are several different designs of AC motor. Some have a commutator and others don't. Small AC motors are known as shaded pole or 'squirrel cage' types used in small fans and record players etc. These just have a single coil on the stator. The rotor has a field induced in it which causes it to move and follow a rotating pattern of Field. If you put DC into a single coil it will probably just overheat and there will be no rotating field for the rotor to follow.
