Coal came first. It was first discovered in the 1300s in the United States by the Hopi Indians. The first use of coal by the Europeans was in the 1740s in Virginia. It then became the dominant power source in the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Steam was found in 1698 from Thomas Savery. He invented what he called a 'miners friend'. Since he intended it to pump water from the mines.

Coal or wood
Most coal is used in the production of electricity by burning the coal to heat water to power steam turbines that run generators.
Thomas Savery, an English military engineer patented the first crude steam engine in 1698. It was used for pumping water out of coal mines. further improvements were made very shortly afterwards by first Thomas Newcomen and then by James Watt.

Steam and coal. I think!
They were powered by steam locomotives. The steam was produced by burning wood or coal.

Bituminous coal can be used for both metallurgical and steam coal applications. Metallurgical coal is used in the steelmaking process to help create coke, while steam coal is used as a fuel source for generating electricity.
Plants came first. Soft coal, also known as brown coal or lignite, forms from the partial decomposition of plant material over millions of years.
