Charles Goodyear invented the process of vulcanisation of rubber.

Before the mid-19th century, natural or India rubber was limited in its usefulness because it melted in hot weather, froze and cracked in cold weather, and tended to stick to virtually everything. Charles Goodyear was a businessman who experimented with the properties of gum elastic. He accidentally discovered the process of vulcanisation of rubber when he dropped some rubber mixed with sulfur on a hot stove. Goodyear missed out on the financial benefits of his invention as Englishman Thomas Hancock copied his idea and attained a British patent for the process before Goodyear applied for a British patent. However, vulcanised rubber was later was made into tyres emblazoned with Goodyear's name.

What is the chemical reaction which occurs during the vulcanization of rubber and when did Charles Goodyear invent the process?

Vulcanization is a chemical process (invented by Charles Goodyear in 1839, patented in 1844), which combined with heat and sulphur, causes polymeric molecules form atomic "bridges" of sulphur or carbon-carbon bonds with other molecules. The once loose, polymer chains are now constrained in mobility due to the chemical cross-linking between polymer chains. This cross-linking is what gives polymers their distinctive properties.

In what year did Charles goodyear invent vulcanized rubber?

Most textbooks point out that Charles Goodyear (1800-1860) invented vulcanisation of rubber as used today by the addition of sulfur in high heat. Depending on what you read, the Goodyear story is one of either pure luck or careful research. Goodyear insisted that it was the latter, though many contemporaneous accounts indicate the former.Goodyear claimed that he discovered vulcanization in 1839, but did not patent the invention until June 15, 1844, and did not write the story of the discovery until 1853 in his autobiographical book Gum-Elastica. Meanwhile, Thomas Hancock (1786-1865), a scientist and engineer, patented the process in the UK on November 21, 1843, eight weeks before Goodyear applied for his own UK patent.See Sources and related links for more information.

How did Charles Goodyear invention impact on the world?

Charles Goodyear's invention of vulcanized rubber in 1839 revolutionized the rubber industry and had a profound impact on various sectors. By creating a more durable and heat-resistant material, his process enabled the production of tires, footwear, and countless other goods, significantly enhancing their performance and longevity. This innovation spurred advancements in transportation, manufacturing, and consumer products, ultimately contributing to the growth of industrialization and modern economies worldwide. Goodyear's work laid the foundation for the widespread use of rubber in everyday life.
