higher current handling / heat dissipation This is not really true as those are not singular characteristics of darlingtons. The major characteristics of a darlington is high gain, typically ranging from over 100 to 1000. And since there are essentially two transistors in the case of a darlington and the base of a darlington is connected to the base of the first transistor whose emitter is connected to the base of the second (power or output) transistor, the forward voltage drop from the base to the emitter of the darlington is approximately 2 times the forward voltage drop of a single transistor. it is a beta multiplier therefore it has higher emitter current capability and it not a hi gain per say just higher current capability as opposed to a regular transistor. usage is for an emitter follower which has no voltgage gain at all.

Why ordinary transistor is known as bipolar junction transistor?

Transistor is known as bipolar junction becoz it has 2 pole. Input is given to the 2 junction and output is taken from to junction

What is the difference between transistor and FET?

An ordinary junction transistor consists of two junctions. In effect a variation of the base to emitter current influences the reverse leakage current at the base to collector junction. The base being common to both junctions. A Field Effect Transistor uses an electric field to narrow the conductive channel thus varying its resistance. A FET has an extremely high input resistance compared with that of a standard junction transistor.

Why input impedance of FET is higher than ordinary transistor?

the gate is insulated from the channel by either a reverse biased junction or silicon dioxide.

Why is an ordinary junction transistor is called bipolar transistor?

Because it uses N-type and P-type semiconductor, usually silicon. The construction will either be NPN or PNP, with the different types in a "sandwich" construction.

What is emitter biasing?

Emitter biasing is when you add a resistor between the emitter of a transistor and the 0v rail so that any voltage developed across the emitter will subtract from the voltage on the base and effectively turn the transistor OFF. We are talking about an NPN transistor and the transistor is an "ordinary transistor" or BJT (bi-polar Junction Transistor). For more information on transistor biasing see: Talking Electronics website.

What is the difference between a switching transistor and an ordinary transistor?

In the switching transistor the output current is controlled by the (current) and this is also called current controlled current device (CCCD). But in ordinary switch we controlled output current physically...
