Above 4-1/2 inch is called Casing.

Below 4-1/2 inch is called Tubing.

Both measured by Internal Diameter.

CASING-Is a large diameter pipe that is assembled and inserted into a recently drilled section of a borehole

TUBING - Small diameter pipe which is installed in the casing. Oil is produced through tubing because it increases the viscosity of fluid and a well's flow capabilities

What a api ndt?

API = American Petroluem Institute NDT = Non-destructive Testing NDT is a process of testing the integrity of a piece of pipe (oil well tubing or casing) that does not damage the material in any way. There is wide range of ways to perform NDT evaluations on tubing and casing products.

What is the difference between a mandrel bender and a pipe bender?

The first difference is actually pipe vs tubing. Pipe is measured at the inside diameter or ID vs tubing being measured at the outside diameter or OD. Dies for bending pipe and tubing are different because of the different measurements. A mandrel is pulled through tubing or pipe to keep the inner diameter constant.

What is the difference between type k and type L copper?

Type K has a thicker wall than type L. Type K is usually used underground and type L is used in Commercial buildings. Type M is usually used in Residential Buildings. M tubing is very thin and in decent codes it is not allowed except for possibly heating. L tubing is used for water supply ABOVE ground for both residential and commercial K tubing having the heaviest wall thickness of copper TUBING is used for under ground applications

Why is pex tubing color coded?

Pex tubing was manufactured for plumbing. The actual tubing comes in two colors, red, and blue. These are to signal hot and cold when you are running the tubing.

What is closed in tubing head pressure in Oil and Gas industry?

usually, the tubing head is the cross-tee connected by flange both at top and bottom. The tubing head is installed on the flange of the casing head, so as to hang the tubing string and seal the annular space between the tubing string and the production casing. The tubing head is made up of the tubing head cross-tee and the tubing hanger.

What are the wellhead?

1- Casing Head 2- Casing spool 3- Tubing Head

What are the wellhead components?

The main components of a wellhead include the casing head, tubing head, and Christmas tree. The casing head provides support for the casing strings and seals off the wellbore. The tubing head provides support for the production tubing and allows for access to the well. The Christmas tree is a series of valves and fittings that control the flow of fluids from the well.

What is the use of Wellhead Equipment in Oil and Gas Industry?

Wellhead equipment are used in connecting the casing and tubing to an oil or gas pipeline. These are useful in suspending the casing strings and help seal the well. The casing is a permanently-installed pipe for lining the well hole to provide pressure containment and prevent collapse. Wellhead equipment are known as the flanged devices that are attached to the casing and they include a number of other components such as casing heads, casing spools, tubing head spools, tees, and crosses. The casing head is part of the connection between the casing and the wellhead equipment itself. Usually, many pieces of wellhead equipment are assembled together into one a single unit that is called a "Christmas tree". These are important for the tubing to be placed into the well while valves and chokes are used to control the flow of oil and/or gas at the surface. Wellheads and and its components may be located on offshore platforms, in sub-sea locations, or onshore.

What is a casing drift?

A casing drift is a tool used to measure the internal diameter of a well casing to ensure that subsequent equipment, such as tubing or tools, will fit properly. It is usually run on a wireline or tubing to verify the borehole's condition before installing new equipment.

What is the difference between fiberglass tubing and pvc tubing?

There is a lot of differences between PVC and Fiberglass. Fiberglass is going to be stronger and PVC is the plastic tubing that you find in local home repair stores. PVC tubing is cheaper than fiberglass. Fiberglass tubing is lighter in weight. PVC tubing can be bent when heat is applied, but fiberglass tubing is fixed and will break, not bend.

What is tubing and casing in well engineering and how are they related in the field?

I will expand on your question a bit, and explain casing, liner, tubing and drill pipe and include some information on the Macondo well. Casing and tubing are tubular goods. Casing is the most outer layer and acts to prevent fluids from coming into the well bore. The casing is cemented in place and the well is sealed. Once the well is cased, a tool called a perforating gun is run into the hole, and holes are maded at selected intervals so the oil or gas can be produced. A well may contain intervals that contain water, so it is important to seal the well using production casing and cement and then select the interval containing oil. A production liner is similar to casing, as it is used as a barrier. The top of a liner is hung from the last caing or liner that is run into the hole. Production tubing or the production string is used to produce the well. See related links. It is placed inside of the casing. There are rubber seals called packers that block fluids from flowing outside of the tubing. Finally, drill pipe is used to drill the well. Tests of productive intervals may be conducted using the drill string, but it is not used as production tubing. Since you asked this question under the BP Oil Spill category, the Macondo well had production casing and at the time of the accident drill pipe had been run to a depth of 8367'. The well was considered by BP engineers to have a good seal because they had pump cement to hold the casing and everything went ok. When they began to replace the drilling fluids with sea water, hydrocarbons began to flow. Evidence presented by BP now indicates that a contributing factor to the blow out was weak cement. Difference between forged steel and carbon steel?

Forged steel has been subject to high temperature and pressure forcing the crystal structure closer together and increasing tensile strength (used in high pressure gas compressors). Carbon steel is conventional steel produced by the Bessemer process. In the oil industry carbon steel is the default option for casing and tubing used in oil wells but it is not very resistant to corrosion. In wells with corrosive compounds such as H2S or CO2 it is often replaced by more expensive 13Cr steel (stainless).
