You probably need a 5hp or 7hp motor. Look for HP rating o the 3 phase motor and select the same for single phase. 3 phase has same power but is more efficient at electricity use. Also consider a 3 phase converter. It allows a 3 phase motor to run on single phase service.
In electrical terms a three phase compressor is a compressor that is driven with a three phase motor. There are compressors that have three pressure heads. The three heads boost the pressure up in higher increments but these are referred to as three stage compressors.
C = common S= start R= run
If your three phase motor runs backward, you have two phases swapped. double check a, b and c phase to find which ones are misplaced.
Depending on who does the work it could be less expensive than getting a different air conditioner. The compressor will also need a capacitor and some rewiring. The old unit could have a 3 phase blower motor also which could run the price up even more. Although the changes can be made, the warranty at best will probably be a one year warranty and a new unit could have a 5-10 year warranty.
You can not change it. 440 volt is by design. However you run it with 220 single phase supply, but it would run far lower power.
only way to convert from 3 phase to 240 would be to change the electric motor on the compressor
To convert a 3-phase air compressor to operate on 240V single-phase power, you'll need to replace the motor with a compatible single-phase motor, as 3-phase motors cannot directly operate on single-phase power. Additionally, you may need to modify or replace the starter and control circuitry to match the new motor's specifications. It's crucial to ensure that the compressor's electrical components are rated for single-phase operation, and always consult a qualified electrician for safety and compliance with local codes.

I would use a totally enclosed motor.

You will need to install a phase converter or change the motor to single phase. You can find a licensed electrician at www.contraxtor.com

It depends on how, and with what you change them.

MOST LIKELY A COMPRESSOR SHORTED TO GROUND IF 3 PHASE. COMPRESSOR START PARTS OR SHORTED COMPRESSOR- SINGLE PHASE. COULD ALSO BE CONDENSER FAN MOTOR OR CAPACITOR ASSUMING IT STARTS WITH THE PRIMARY COMPRESSOR. WITH POWER OFF, CHECK WITH OHMMETER EACH COMPRESSOR LEAD TILL YOU FIND SHORT (LOW RESISTANCE READING). IF THREE PHASE, IT IS POSSIBLE TO REVERSE MOTOR DIRECTION IN AN ATTEMPT TO FREE UP A FROZEN COMPRESSOR (RECIP ONLY, NOT FOR SCROLL IN THAT THEY ARE ROTATION SPECIFIC). ONCE YOU GET IT GOING OR HAVE COMPRESSOR REPLACED, FIND OUT WHAT CAUSED FAILURE AND FIX IT. IT WILL JUST HAPPEN AGAIN IF YOU DON'T. THEY DON'T JUST WEAR OUT IF MAINTAINED PROPERLY. lc
