What was the importance of the Battle of Great Bridge?

By winning the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, Constantine became the ruler of the Western Roman Empire. He defeated Maxentius. The story is that on the evening before the battle, he saw a cross burning in the sky, and written underneath it were the words, "In hoc signe vinces" or "In this sign you will conquer." Immediately, he had crosses put on the shields of all his soldiers, and, after winning the battle, converted to Christianity, ultimately making Rome a Christian Empire as opposed to a Pagan one, as it had been for centuries.

The Milvian Bridge was a stone bridge (since 109 CE) spanning the River Tiber, with Rome two miles away to the south. Maxentius destroyed the bridge before Constantine arrived, so as leave his enemy no chance of marching over it to Rome. But in its place he constructed another bridge boats, consisting of two halves linked by iron bolts which could unfastened if the enemy tried to cross; and between the river and the city he built a network of trenches and forts, to cover his retreat into Rome should this become necessary. But then Maxentius made the disastrous decision to move his forces north of the Tiber. There was a ferocious struggle, and Maxentius' left flank was turned and his troops forced back to the Tiber. The bridge of boats broke under their weight and many soldiers fell into the river and were drowned - including Maxentius himself.

When Constantine entered Rome, the senate proclaimed him "Maximus Augustus": first of the three Augusti, the senior emperor. The civil wars were not yet at an end. Although Constantine had now become master of the entire west, the eastern provinces remained outside his control, in the realms of Maximinus II Daia, who was hostile, and of Licinius.

Eusebius later reported that during the day before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, Constantine prayed to God. As he prayed in this fashion and as he earnestly gave voice to his entreaties, a most marvellous sign appeared to the emperor from God. This account is remarkably similar to a previous account when the god Apollo put a sign in the sky to show Constantine that he would be victorious in an earlier battle.
