An isolator is a non load-breaking switch, and is provides a visible means of isolating a component, such as a circuit breaker, transformer, etc., from the high-voltage lines, whenever it is necessary to perform maintenance of that component. Normally, isolators come in pairs, with one on each side of the component to be isolated. Isolators are only opened afterthe load current has been broken using a circuit breaker, and must be closed before the circuit breaker is reclosed.

To work on, say, a h.v. circuit breaker, the breaker must be tripped, the isolators on either side must be opened and locked off, temporary earths attached to either side of the circuit breake- to-work card, detailing the maintenance work, must be issued to the crew by the supervising engineer.

What compose a transformer substation?

A transformer substation comprises of transformation equipment- the transformers, the accessories for the connection of the transformers to the HT Lines (Primary Input)- usually concrete poles/steel towers, insulators etc; normally two or more transformers are present to allow maintenance and faults without the supply being interrupted. 2. The substation protective equipment such as lightning Arresters, Line Fuses and Breakers, Isolators (as appropriate) 3. Effective Earthing system and equipment 4. The Distribution equipment such as feeder pillar units, busbars etc depending on the type of transformer substation.

Where the rtus are placed in power system?

RTUs play a vital role in communication of signals and information between two stations in a Power system network. In a substation, all the signals and information of interest and importance are captured and transmitted to upstream substation using RTU. These are placed in control buildings of important substations.

What is a mini-substation?

A substation that is smaller than the average substation. A substation converts electric power from one voltage to another.

How do isolators help in reducing earthquake damages in buildings?

We find that isolators that are incorporated into structures allow that building to move independently of the ground. This construction strategy permits the energy of the quake to be damped by the isolators, and this reduces the damage done to the structure.

What is the difference between isolators and conductors?

Isolators are materials that do not easily allow the flow of electricity, while conductors are materials that readily allow the flow of electricity. Isolators have high resistance to the flow of electrical current, while conductors have low resistance. Examples of isolators include rubber and glass, while examples of conductors include metals like copper and silver.

What is green field substation?

In my line of work that is an Electrical High Voltage substation that is brand new. It is being built from a green field into an energized fully functional substation yard. There is no existing substation or remodeling of an existing one being done.

Why isolators can be operated only under noload?

It is because that Isolators does not have any arc quenching medium with it, Whenever you make or break any contacts on load it produces arc which is to be quenched or it may harm man & material. Therefore it is not advisable to operate Isolators at on load condition.
