The model 747 wasn't really invented. It was more like, "developed" from a number of concepts and ideas combined.

Initially it was conceived to be the next generation military transport, hence its size.

But Boeing's marketing arm was able to sell it as a multi-role civilan transport. The gamble paid off.

The idea first came in the 1960s when the need for a much larger airplane arrived. After years of design development, in Sept. 30 1968 the first model rolled out of the assembly line. Then on Feb 9 1969 it took to the air for the first time.
