The steelpan, also known as the steel drum, originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1930s. Its invention is attributed to the creative efforts of various musicians who adapted discarded oil drums, tuning them to produce musical notes. Notable contributors to its development include Ellie Mannette and Winston "Spree" Simon, who helped refine the instrument's design and sound. r'kardo is a kind of neo soul jazz singer songwriter from New York....I think originally from Trinidad or Jamaica. I've seen him at Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar more than once, and he is really good, like a more funky sounding Will Downing....but he obviously added reggae and calypso influences in his set and had an incredible guy on steelpan ....but the set had too many covers I think even though he did them justice and made it sound fresh. His original material was really good and this is one CD I woudl buy when it came out. He does a cover of Alanis Morrisette;s 'Uninvited' that is amazing with the steelpan.
