If the fan does not go off after 2 hours from switching it off and you know that the fan unit has a timer, then it is likely that the fan unit has either recently become faulty (if you know that it always went off before) or, if it is a new fan, that it has been wired up incorrectly.

<><><>

A fan unit which has a timer in it must have two separate "hot" wires feeding it:

  1. A "non-switched hot", which is permanently fed with power from the breaker on the main supply panel. After the fan has been switched on using the "switched hot" wire described below, this "non-switched hot" wire keeps the fan running for the length of time the timer has been set for.
  2. A "switched hot" wire which should be connected to the on/off switch that controls the fan.

Depending on the actual design of the control circuitry inside the fan unit, if the above two "hots" have been connected to the fan unit the wrong way round, the result can be that the fan will "stay on and running" all the time, regardless of the position of the on/off switch for its circuit.

The solution is to switch off all the power at the main breaker panel and, after you have checked that no wires are still "hot" or "live", re-wire the "hots" on the fan unit the other way round:

  • You must ensure that the "switched hot" connection on the fan unit is no longer connected to the permanent hot feed wire coming from the breaker on the main supply panel. (It should now be connected to the switched hot wire from on/off switch that controls the fan.)
  • The "non-switched hot" connection on the fan unit isconnected to the permanent hot feed wire from the breaker on the main supply panel. (Instead of to the switched hot wire from the on/off switch that controls the fan).

More details:

If the fan stays on after it has been switched off there is probably a timer inside the fan unit which will turn the fan off after a set time. If the fan does not go off after 2 hours from switching it off then either the fan unit has no timer but has been wired up incorrectly - so that it is not controlled by the on/off switch (see above) or the timer may have been set to stay on continuously.

Sometimes a fan may come on when the switch for a light in the same room has been turned on but, if the fan has a timer, that timer will keep the fan running even after the light has been switched off.

Sometimes a fan may have its own on/off switch, separate to another switch controlling a light in the same room. In that situation you might switch off both the light and the fan but, if the fan has a timer, the timer will still keep the fan running even after the light has been switched off.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

How do you remove male pipe from stubborn female pipe?

An inside pipe wrench also called a pipe extractor. It drives into the broken off pipe and is then turned with a crescent wrench.Normally a extractor or inside pipe wrench does not work removing a pipe . What works best is the use of a hack saw blade and a chisel to cave in the threads after the threads are cut.. BECAREFUL not to cut into the fitting threads

Do you need to shut off your hot water heater when swapping out copper pipes in a bathroom remodel?

Water heaters should be turned off, with the gas or electric to them turned off as well, when replacing any hot water lines. This would also be a good time to drain the tank and remove any built up water scale. This makes your heater more efficient.

What opens or closes an electrical circuit?

That function was traditionally implemented in the form of a mechanical deviceknown as a "switch".The practice became so firmly embedded in the art and science of electricitythat the word became the generic term for any device that could performany similar function, so that now we have "switching transistors", integrated"CMOS switches", and even central office telephone-circuit "switches".

Are switches wired in parallel?

Yes, switches in a circuit are typically wired in parallel. This allows each switch to control the same load independently; when one switch is turned on, it completes the circuit and allows current to flow, regardless of the position of the other switches. This configuration is commonly used in lighting circuits, enabling multiple switches to operate the same light fixture from different locations.

What is the purpose of a bathroom fan switch and how does it function in controlling the ventilation system?

The purpose of a bathroom fan switch is to control the ventilation system in a bathroom. When the switch is turned on, it activates the fan to remove moisture, odors, and pollutants from the air. This helps to improve air quality and prevent mold and mildew growth in the bathroom.

What is faucet water?

A water faucet is the mechanical device fitted to the water supply pipes over bathroom and kitchen sinks. When turned on they supply water.

What is the purpose of the bathroom exhaust fan switch and how does it function in controlling the ventilation system?

The purpose of the bathroom exhaust fan switch is to control the ventilation system by turning the exhaust fan on and off. When the switch is turned on, it activates the exhaust fan, which helps remove moisture, odors, and pollutants from the bathroom. This helps improve air quality and prevent mold and mildew growth.

How does a screw extractor work?

A screw extractor is a tool with a reverse-threaded end designed to grip onto a damaged or stripped screw. By drilling a small hole into the screw, the extractor can be inserted and turned counterclockwise to remove the screw from the material. The reverse-threaded design helps to create a gripping force that loosens the screw as it is turned.

How do you fix switch that blows when turned off bathroom lights and fan?

If you have any condition in your bathroom where a switch is malfunctioning you need to replace the switch or the device that is causing the problem. This is very dangerous in a bathroom because of the increased danger of shock because of moisture.

Where is the switch allowed to be placed in the bathroom?

In North America the switch can be placed either inside the room or outside the room. When it is inside the room it is placed on the opening side of the door so that when you enter the room, the switch can be flipped on. When the switch is located on the outside of the room a convenient placement is close to the door opening so that when you open the door the switch can be turned on in one continuous motion.

When a light switch is turned on what travels through the wire?

Current flows through a wire when a light switch is turned on.

Why does a light switch get hot when turned on?

A light switch can get hot when turned on because of the flow of electricity through the switch. This flow of electricity causes resistance in the switch, which generates heat as a byproduct.
