Though this theoretically could work on a very few power tools, it is NOT a good idea and most likely doing it will only wreck the tool (or the dimmer switch). And why would you want to lower the voltage anyway?
Why would you want to do that -where would you obtain a lower voltage supply suitable for supplying a residence.
Decibels (db) is relative power, log base 2, times 3. Increasing power from 200 watts to 400 watts is doubling power, so the decibel change is +3 db.800 watts would be +6 db, 1600 watts would be +9 db, 100 watts would be -3 db, 50 watts would be -6 db, and so on.
A load flow study must be done to rightly determine this. A simplified approach to begin would be to look at the power equation: P = V1*V2*sin(phi) / (X1), where v1 and v2 are the voltages at the two nodes in question (the wind farm, and the remote location), phi is the phase angle between these voltages, and X1 is the reactance of the line between these two nodes. By raising the voltage at the wind farm, or by increasing phi, or by lower X1 by using better conductor / design, more power can be transmitted.
you would have to put some type of resistor in the circuit with the motor...the resistor would have to be in series with the motor and would have to be of a high enough value to lower the voltage by 9 volts....There is a formula for working this out but you would need the amperage of the motor to figure this....
