Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below. Being loyal-faithful or dedicated to someone or something-is not always easy. People often have conflicting loyalties, and there are no guidelines that help them decide to what or whom they should be loyal. Moreover, people are often loyal to something bad. Still, loyalty is one of the essential attributes a person must have and must demand of others. Adapted from James Carville, Stickin': The Case for LoyaltyAssignment: Should people always be loyal? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

ESSAY:

Loyalty is often thought to be a desirable quality, whether in a dog or child, but does it really end up making a positive difference in the world? The congress's declaration of war on Iraq and the Souths acceptance of slavery prove it to have a negative impact.

In 2001 the congress declared war on Iraq. They were prompted by false allegations that Saddam Hussein was associated with the attacks on the world trade center. Of course in retrospect, this was not the right decision. The war has cost thousands of American lives and over a trillion dollars with little to no progress. Is loyalty to the president at fault? On the news recently there has been lots of talk about the polygamist compound in Texas. Although people living there believe what they're doing is right, it makes their children vulnerable to abuse and molestation; however, their loyalty to tradition and their religious leaders makes them blind to the damage they are causing. Loyalty even to the ideas of our society can have a negative impact on the world. Many born in the South in the 18 hundreds were exposed to slavery at an early age. They were brought up to accept it and even defend it with their lives. They were unable to see its horrific truth because of their loyalty to their societies ideas.

However, who among us can say they are without loyalty? Everyone is influenced by their upbringing. Everyone has loyalty to some idea or another. Although loyalty blinds people to social injustices and lies, it is unavoidable and inevitable. Perhaps today there is a type of slavery lurking in our society, but we callously accept it. However someday, some Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks, without loyalty to traditional ideals will open our eyes and reveal to us the truth. Thats the best I can do in 25 minutes rate from 1-12, 12 being best.
