Try to avoid using conjunctive adverbs at the beginning of a sentence as their purpose it to join sentences/clauses/phrases together. Conjunctive adverbs include: thereby, however, consequently, hence, therefore, thus, etc.

I have seen it used by many authors and professionals although i would suggest avoiding it if you are writing in a formal manner.
