Lunar Highlands: light, heavily cratered areas of the surface of the moon.
Mare: dark areas on the surface of the moon (once believed they were seas or oceans). They are large, flat areas composed of an igneous rock called Basalt.
Unlike Earth, the moon has no atmosphere to protect it - which means that debris will collide with the moon to create craters.
Most of these debri impacts occured between 4.1 billion and 3.8 billion years ago. There is no wind or water to change the shape of the craters, so they remain as they were formed.
