It's easy. Memorize them! There are only eight: Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Conjunctions, Prepositions, and Interjection.

Nouns -- person, place, or thing: piano, city, friend. There are proper nouns, common nouns, count nouns, and mass nouns.

Pronouns -- words that replace nouns. There are quite a few types of pronouns: personal (I, you, we, he, she, it, and they); demonstrative (that, this); interrogative (what, which, and who); relative (that, what, which, and who); indefinite such as another, any, each, and either; possessive such as mine, his, its, and whose; reflexive (myself, himself, herself, etc).

Verbs -- words that express an action or state of being.

Adverb -- words that modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

Adjectives -- words that describe nouns and pronouns. Articles (a/an, the) fall into the adjective category.

Conjunctions -- words such as for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, either...or, neither...nor that connect phrases and clauses.

Interjections -- words or phrase added to denote a strong emotion such as Ah ha!

Prepositions -- words that relate nouns or pronouns to other words in the sentence. At, in, under, and on are just a few examples of prepositions.

OK.. the EASIEST method to learn the definitions of the above... is.. simply read. Read books. Anything that interests you. Read for fun. Read for study. Read because you have to (it gets easier the more you do it).

This is known as learning by usage, but don't underrate memorizing the basics first and then rely on usage. In my opinion, neither of them can make learning RIGHT without the other.

Reading is more finite and gives you an ear for construction... painlessly usually.

When you read, don't scan. It's sloppy. Not even John F. Kennedy who was supposed to do this, didn't really. He read every word... but fast. And the more you read, the faster you get, and the more grammar and information seeps into you by osmosis.

Now... Not all books published and in print today, unfortunately, are written with no grammar errors. In fact, errors are increasing. Copy Editing is becoming a dying skill. But, go for the gold. Good grammar keeps things clear, meaning is less confusing or refutable, and you will usually win an argument if you know your grammar (via irrefutable and clear expression) ... and vocabulary ... and knowing your facts, and this is spelled R-E-S-E-A-R-C-H.

By the way, no matter how good your grammar is... you will lose with what is called the ad hominem fallacy. Ha! gotcha! That is calling names. The words are Latin and translate: against the (wo)man... (not the issue)

And I do NOT believe in memorizing lists of words. Read. Come up with one word a week... just one... that is new to you. Master that one in all its idiomatic forms. And, when reading.. instead of stopping to look up a word every time a new one crops up, jot it down.. keep reading (keep your pace, that's important... don't interrupt yourself).

Make an "assumption" (yea yea yea) from the context... context is a MARVELOUS vocabulary teacher! Later.. it might be fun to see if you figured it out.

Keep the slang situational.. and that means.. there are times you don't use slang when it is in your own best interests not to.

The Parts of Speech are the very first elementary building blocks of good English. Learning them can be fun if you challenge yourself and find yourself asking, "what's next?" hmmm and even if you don't

But, bottom line... anything new can be, for that matter. It just requires one factor. You... wanting to be the best you can be.
