Habitual alcohol use is, quite simply, when you drink alcohol out of habit, and not solely for enjoyment. You can go out drinking every Friday night, but not be a "habitual drinker" if it does not seriously affect your mood if you can't. Whereas if you have a drink every day, and you get extremely cranky if you miss one, you probably have a drinking problem.
