To swear actually means to promise to do something. You swear "by" something that is important to you, such as God, your life, someone you love, or your rulers.

However, nowadays the term usually means to swear profanely - in other words, to use curse words. You don't need any lessons on how to use those - you see them on all the movies and TV shows.

Here are some words people use INSTEAD of profanity when they don't want to curse (such as when they're at work or in school) from How Stuff Works:

Dagnabit Oy Darn it Poop Funky tut Shang-a-lang Jebus Shoot Jeep 'n eagle Son of a monkey Jeezy creezy Sweet cheeses Mother-scratcher Tartar sauce Oh, biscuits Zip -zap

The most colorful way to swear is the American Old West way, where you let fly such a torrent of words that the other person is completely overwhelmed. And the beauty of this method is - there are no actual obscene words used, so you can't get in trouble in school!

Here are some good examples of cowboy insults:

  • When I'm done with you, there won't be enough left of you to snore.
  • You're so ugly you have to sneak up on a glass to get a drink of water.
  • If your brains were dynamite, there wouldn't be enough to blow your nose.
  • You ain't fit to shoot at if I wanted to unload my gun.
