It is a hanging indent.
The first line of a paragraph that extends further to the left than the rest of the paragraph is called a hanging indent.
To indent the first line of each paragraph one-half inch from the left margin, you can set the paragraph formatting to have a half-inch first line indent. This can typically be done in word-processing software like Microsoft Word by going to the "Paragraph" settings and adjusting the indentation options. Simply specify a 0.5-inch first line indent to achieve the desired formatting.
In MS Word, highlight the section, then on the top menu (left), click "Clear Formatting" which is the first item in the Styles and Formatting List (look for AA icon). That returns the text to the default used in that file.

A section of text that consists of one or more sentences, begins on a new and often in dented line, and contains a distinct idea or the words of one speaker. It ends at the point on which the user presses the Enter/Return key. With the hidden characters on, you will see a paragraph marker indicating where the paragraph ends.

I'm assuming you're talking about an English essay.... Block style essays are when you talk about each topic in its own paragraph, instead of using the alternating style. For example, if you are writing a compare and contrast paper, block style means that the first paragraph is only about the first book, the second paragraph is only about the second book, and the third paragraph is only comparison/contrast. Hope this helps! The other kind of block style is formatting your text to take up the whole line. There's a button in Word that does it.
