That depends on the type of article you are writing, certainly 'you' is less formal than 'the author'. 'You' can sometimes cause confusion where it is not obvious whether you mean 'you, i.e. the author' or 'you, i.e. the reader'. The other expression to substitute for 'you' is 'one' but that would sound very formal and rather precious in modern English. Languages such as German and French are much happier using the equivalent to 'one'. What you should not do is mix the use of 'you' and 'the author' in the same article - choose a style and stick to it.
