In my opinion, it has mostly a Negative Connotation because to me a Liberal is a person who pretends they know everything, and thinks everyone is a moron, Redneck, or a Southern piece of Trash.
Of course, the above connotation works for people who describe themselves as conservatives. People who describe themselves as liberals tend to think that liberals are people who are compassionate, caring, more interested in justice than the interests of the rich, and free from prejudice.
As you see, some people see liberals as those free from prejudice and others as people full of prejudice. It totally depends on who you are.
