i found the English phrase "It's a good father that knows his son" means: good as a father is,maybe he still doesn't know his son very well.but,if following the normal understanding ways, the phrase should be an Emphatic Pattern sentense with the meaning that only good father could know his son very well.so why doesn't this kind of understanding shift happen?is it because certain special grammar that i haven't known yet or is it because it's a established usage which contains no grammatical phenomena.if it's the former, please tell me what the grammar is and if it's the latter please explain how did this kind of conflict between grammar and everyday usage form.is it a sole case in English or not?if there's still any usages like this, please give me some examples. Thanks a lot!

What are the symbols in the father by Hugh garner?

Summary of Story: The Story is about a relationship between a boy and his father. Their relationship has drifted away from each other. But when an important event draws them together, the father realized what he has done wrong and what he has to do to save his relationship with his son.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Character Analysis: The Father: The father is an alcoholic. In this story he is portrayed as an insensitive boor who has poor judgment and constantly embarrasses his son. The father bases his thoughts and judgments on how other people would think of him. He thinks he knows his son Johnny the best, but he actually knows his son the least out of everybody. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Johnny: Johnny is an active boy who is shy around certain adults. He rarely expresses his feelings to his father, but rather to his mom. His relationship with his father made him a little left out because his friends' fathers usually play and work with each other.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plot Analysis: Beginning of Story: In the beginning of the story, the father and his son was described and the relationship between the two were clarified. The boy had to go to a meeting with his dad in scouts, that was when.....--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Middle of the story: In the middle of the story, the son and his father were in the meeting. The father embarasses his son in front of the scouts master by saying how he would rather take his son to a burlesque show rather then coming with him to the meeting. Then when Johnny was presented an award, his father raises Johnny's hands up to the air like a referee. This causes the important turning point......---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------End of the story: At the end of the meeting, Johnny tells his father he did not want the award. When the father grabbed Johnny's arm and Johnny ran away, he knew the damage was done. The father realized he embarassed his son way too much in front of his peers. Then he realizes that everything that has happened to him was all his fault, and he wonders if he will ever fix his position in the relationship with his son again.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ever thought of these? How come Johnny's mother knew about the relationship between Johnny and his dad and she didn't do anything about it? Isn't family suppose to help each other out? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- My thoughts/comments/opinions: I thought the story was really good. The author described the characters so realy it was like i was right there in the story with Johnny and his father. I would rate this story 9/10. I think the part when the father hold up his son's arms into the air like a referee was the biggest mistake he made. There was a thought I had when I was reading the book. If my father was like the father in this story, I would probably tell my friends and tell my mom to help me with the problem. Johnny didn't do anything at all to fix the relationship between his father and himself. So I think he should've done something to fix his position in his relationship between his father.

Summary of Delay by Elizabeth Jennings?

The father complains that he does not understand his own child. Though they have lived together for so many years now i.e. since the time of his son's birth, the father knows nothing of him. The father tries to build up a relationship with his son from the early years, in a manner when his son began to recognize people around, to crawl and to walk in a desperate attempt. The father wonders whether he has destroyed the seed of his off-spring or sown it where the land belongs to his heir and none is his. Both father and son continue to speak like strangers now and there seem no signs of understanding in the air between the two. In traditional belief, the son is created and born to the likings and designs of his father, yet in this case, the father cannot share what his son loves. Most of the time silence surrounds them. The father's greatest wish is for his son to be 'The Prodigal' son who will very soon return to his father's house; the home which he always knew. This is definitely the better alternative rather than to see his son move out into the world blindly on his own, by himself and fall into trouble. The father is ready to forgive him at any cost as long as he is able to reshape him up from the long bounded sorrow to a new love. Both father and son all over the world must learn to live on the same globe and on the same land. The father finally admits that there are times that he cannot understand himself or why his anger grows from grief? However they have learnt to put out each other's empty hand and with each other's heart that is longing for something to forgive.

Why does the father kill himself in the boat Alistair Macleod?

The father kills himself in the boat because he knows that his son will continue to fish as long as he is alive. If the father kills himself then the son will be free to get on with his life, get an education and become anything but a fisherman. Remember that the son said he would fish with his father until his father died and the father said to him that he should remember this promise
