The conflict in the book is their younger son's depression and the father's relationship with the mother. The younger son's depression is solved when he dates a girl and when he speaks about his emotions. The father's relations with his wife was solved by when the mother moves away to Europe. In the beginning of the book, their oldest son got killed in a boat accident causing the younger son's depression. The son's depression also caused the father to care more about his son than his wife. That also cause the father and mother to part way.
