The essay "Life is a Three-Ring Circus" tells the story of a reporter/marketer that covers a circus early in his career. He promotes the circus by talking about the clown in a very cliche way... the clown laughs to hide his tears, has a really horrible life hidden by the makeup, etc. When he meets the clown in person he realizes that he was really wrong. This clown is a normal guy, and has a successful life. He is ashamed that he wrote about him without knowing him, but the clown says he will go along with it, and tells him that his life is like a three-ring circus. He can be a different person for the public, for his family, and by himself. This advice inspires the journalist to make some changes in his life. Many years later, he promotes another circus, writing about the clown as a successful businessman, but when he meets the clown, he realizes that it is the same one. He has hit some bad luck, and his life is in shambles. But as he leaves, another man comes to take the clown's picture and he turns instantly from sad to happy and is laughing.

The essay makes you think about the different parts of ourselves that we present to others, and how integrated the way we act and the way we feel are.
