Is Ethan Frome sympathetic?

Yes. Ethan Frome is very sympathetic towards Ethan and Mattie but much less so towards Zeena. Though this story is not told by Ethan Frome himself but instead told to the reader by a man passing through town, it is told from Ethan's perspective. Therefore it makes sense that if the story is told from Ethan's perspective it will more than likely be more sympathetic to that character. Readers develop a sympathy towards Ethan because of his failed attempts to leave Starkfield, his longing to be with Mattie, his marriage to a bitter and sickly woman, the "smash up" with Mattie, and his life with Mattie and Zeena in the end. Because of Ethan Frome's theme of Naturalism, the reader is meant to see the main characters (especially Ethan) as victims of their own circumstances.

Is there any tragedy in the novel Ethan Frome If there is what it is?

Ethan Frome is not a tragedy. The only thing you could say is a tragedy is that Ethan ends up living a horrible life and suffering the whole time. This novel is not a tragedy because a tragedy must contain a tragic hero, and this novel does not. Ethan is not a tragic hero, he doesn't learn from his mistakes, and he doesnt even take action. He wimps out and tries to kill himself. Some say that was taking action, but it was the easy way out. Ethan Frome is not a tragedy, it is just a cruel book that tells the tale of 3 peoples miserable lives.

What is Ethan's last plan in Ethan frome?

Ethan's last plan was to go sledding down the hill with Mattie aiming for the big tree so that they could die with each other. Since they couldn't imagine what it was like to live without the other.
