Earls and dukes are titles of the aristocracy in Europe. Although the hierarchy varies between countries, the order of precedence in the UK is:
Duke
Marquis
Earl
Viscount
Baron
Baronet
Knight
In other words, A Duke outranks an Earl. Several members of the British royal family carry the title of Duke (as well as Earl), which is the highest honour that the ruling monarch can bestow. There are several families in the U.K. honoured with the title of Duke outside of the royal family where notable dukes are The Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of York, and the Duke of Cambridge.
Currently there are no Duke of Earls. Duke of Earl is an old saying, and not any specific person with any specific title or employment, although it may seem so.
Some people believe Earls high school is haunted. This has never been proven however, and many do not believe in ghosts or hauntings.
Its another way of saying your mother.. or pop dukes for father lol Ive known it for years I dont know how it came to be though..
The singular possessive is duke's.
It comes from Cockney Rhyming slang. 'Forks'was a slang name for hands. Rhyming slang turned this into 'Duke of Yorks', finally contracted to 'dukes' for hands.
I'm assuming you're referring to a Shakespearian character. There are several Earls and Dukes of Gloucester in Shakespeare's works. In Henry IV, Part 2, Suffolk accuses the Duke of Gloucester of treason and he is imprisoned, but before his trial Suffolk sends two assassins to kill him. You probably aren't referring to the other Duke of Gloucester, because he dies in Richard III, in which he is the title character and referred to as Richard III. I don't think the Earl of Gloucester in King Lear died, but he had his eyes poked out. Ick.

There were five titles of the noble families of Britain. The Dukes were the highest noble title, then the Marquises, the Earls, the Viscounts and the Barons.
Gentry refers to nobility. In England, the gentry refer to people with titles. These would be knights, dukes, earls, barons, viscounts, and the like.
This term refers to those citizens of the United Kingdom who do NOT are not nobles (such as dukes, earls, barons and their wives) . Even knights and baronets rank as commoners. l
