Horace, whose original name was Quintus Horatius Flaccus, was born on December 8, 65 BC, and died on the 27th of November 8 BC.

As generally taught in schools, the main functions of literature, according to Horace, are:

1. Dulce (meaning "sweetness"). It should appeal to "human pleasure" or to the emotional aspect, or simply to entertain.

2. Utile (meaning "usefulness"). It should appeal to "human intellect;" drawing application to life.

3. Movere ( meaning "to move"). It should appeal to "human imagination;" igniting the soul of the reader.

Some authors include the third function ("movere") in their textbooks; some only have two.
