When Odysseus and his men feel it is time to leave, Circe helps Odysseus by advising him to visit the prophet Teiresias in the Underworld. There he learns of the dangers ahead of Scylla, Charybdis, the Sirens, and Helios' cattle.

In Homer's "The Odyssey", Odysseus receives directions on how to get to Hades from the goddess, Circe. In order to get Tiresias to answer his questions about what fate awaited him in the future, he had to take an offering of a ram.
You could not take shelter from the sirens unless you had either a musician on the ship as was the case for the Argonauts who had Orpheus; or had had the directions of Circe who aided Odysseus.
