What do examiners look for when marking English?

It depends on exactly what exam you have just done. Take English Literature, for example, the examiner will look for use of punctuation, spelling and also, conventional English syntax. It is important to use P.E.E, (point, evidence and explain), this helps you so the examiner will be able to recognise you have made your point, carried on to use your evidence and then to finish, by showing your explanation. Using quotations or references is a good way to show your evidence when you're using P.E.E. It is good as well to show you have a wide knowledge of the subject you have been studying about, this shows the examiner(s) you know what you're talking about. Also, when you have been given a question you need to answer it fully and don't drag away from the question unless you are doing a comparison. This is generally what examiners look for when they're marking an English paper.

Who composed the first writing in English called essays?

The first writing in English referred to as essays was composed by Sir Francis Bacon. He published a collection of essays in 1597, titled "Essays," which explored various topics including morality, human behavior, and philosophy. Bacon's work laid the groundwork for the essay as a literary form and influenced many later writers. His approach combined personal reflections with broader observations, making his essays both introspective and analytical.
