It depends on exactly what exam you have just done. Take English Literature, for example, the examiner will look for use of punctuation, spelling and also, conventional English syntax. It is important to use P.E.E, (point, evidence and explain), this helps you so the examiner will be able to recognise you have made your point, carried on to use your evidence and then to finish, by showing your explanation. Using quotations or references is a good way to show your evidence when you're using P.E.E. It is good as well to show you have a wide knowledge of the subject you have been studying about, this shows the examiner(s) you know what you're talking about. Also, when you have been given a question you need to answer it fully and don't drag away from the question unless you are doing a comparison.

This is generally what examiners look for when they're marking an English paper.
