HB refers to the hardness of the pencil. In the scale H is used for harder pencils (H for hard) HH HHH HHHH all get progressively harder, and B (the B stands for black) BB BBB BBBB get progressively softer.

HB pencils (#2 on the US pencil-hardness scale) are right in the middle, so the HB stands for Hard Black.

It just represents a shade of pencil. The scale goes like this:

9B-8B-7B-6B-5B-4B-3B-2B-B-HB-F-H-2H-3H-4H-5H-6H-7H-8H-9H

Where there is a higher the B number, the darker and harder it is, while the number for H indicates how soft it is. B pencils are usually used for drafting, and H pencils are used for art, like shading. HB is most commonly for generic use in schools and such, because it is right in the middle of the scale.

But you should know that this is an English scale, as in Britain, and in the USA they use numbers such as No. 2. This is why you sometimes see both No.2 and HB side by side.

The H pencils smudge easily, so you can make smoother and more even shaders, B pencils are meant for accuracy so do not smudge easily.

Which is softer an HB or 2B Pencil?

The order of hardness goes:9H 8H 7H 6H 5H 4H 3H 2H H F HB B 2B 3B 4B 5B 6B 7B 8B 9B hard medium soft

What is the full form of HB pencil?

If you mean what HB stands for, it's an indicator for the hardness (H) or softness (B) of the graphite and clay used. However, the B is for blackness so HB is like average/medium grade so the full form would be Hard Black, Hard and Black, or Hard Blackness. If you check out pencils like 3H, you'll notice that the tone when writing or drawing is light compared to an HB. Conversely, a 3B pencil will give you a darker tone.

What does bh stand for in pencil?

i think you mean HB, Many pencils across the world, and almost all in Europe, are graded on the European system using a continuum from "H" (for hardness) to "B" (for blackness), as well as "F" (for fine point). The standard writing pencil is graded HB. According to Petroski, this system might have been developed in the early 1900s by Brookman, an English pencil maker. It used "B" for black and "H" for hard; a pencil's grade was described by a sequence or successive Hs or Bs such as BB and BBBfor successively softer leads, and HH and HHH for successively harder ones. As of 2009, a set of pencils ranging from a very hard, light-marking pencil to a very soft, black-marking pencil usually ranges from hardest to softest as follows.

Are most pencils 2?

Not necessarily. A #2 pencil may also be designated as HB. Most of the ones that you see at the grocery store or big office supply store will be number 2 (lead hardness). But I know that #3 wood pencils do exist (#3 is a harder lead). They are probably less common now, than used to be, though. Maybe at an art store or drafting supply, you might find different hardness pencils.

Is HB 2 the softest lead pencil?

I don't quite understand what you mean by HB-2 pencil but if you mean HB pencil / #2 Pencil it is not the softest pencil. Pencils scale from 9H to 9B, (HB in the middle) and 9B would the softest and darkest pencil there.

What is the difference between an hb 2 pencil and a hb pencils?

HB 2 pencil has a slightly softer lead than a regular HB pencil, which gives it darker markings. The "2" in HB 2 stands for the American grading system, while the regular HB is based on the European grading system. Both are commonly used for general writing and drawing.
