In parts of Australia, the nature strip is a grassed area between the front boundary of a residence and the road. It is used as a public footpath, though it's generally considered the resident's responsibility to keep it mowed and maintained. Where there are no front fences or walls, the effect is very pleasing because the roadsides in suburban streets have a charming green look. Local councils usually plant trees at intervals along nature strips, generally one outside each home, and it's Council's responsibility to keep the trees maintained and trimmed; residents can do so too, though they can't cut down the trees without permission.
