A sense of purpose is a thought-out deliberate action that makes you feel a passion to complete your goal, one you consider good and worthy. This can be very ordinary, or very profound. Examples of ordinary:

  • You saved $300.00 to buy presents. You search stores online looking for best deals and make a shopping list. You set out for the mall with a sense of purpose, knowing exactly what you want to buy.
  • Every person cleans up a room, an apartment, or house for different reasons. Some clean as a regular habit. Others wait until a special occasion. Today, you decided to invite your family for Thanksgiving Dinner. You set out to clean completely, with a sense of purpose not just as a chore.
  • Bills are often distressing to open. But with a sense of purpose, a woman sat down, determined to get her finances straightened out. When she was finished, she felt satisfied and in control.

A profound sense of purpose can occur at any age, in many circumstances, such as:

  • After working part time jobs, a 28 year old remembered her dream job. She decided to enter college to get a degree. For the first time in years, she felt a sense of purpose.
  • A man enlisted in the Army right out of high school, went to war the next year, and lost his legs. He felt his life came to an end. Then, a young boy asked how he lost his legs. Talking to the boy, he knew he wanted to become a teacher. He felt a sense of purpose.
  • After her child was killed by a drunk driver, a woman started MADD. This was her sense of purpose.
  • Months after his child was abducted, the man started a Missing Children's advocacy group.
  • Having been a mom and raising her kids for 20 years, a 55 year old woman felt adrift. One Sunday at church, she met a speaker who worked with rape victims. She began to volunteer for a Rape Crisis Center. This gave her a sense of purpose.
  • A 13-year old got bullied every day at school. She was isolated and depressed. One day she began speaking up for Bullied Kids. Her ideas went national. She petitioned the governor to create an anti-bullying bill.
  • A young woman had a baby. She had a HS education, but few job skills. For 3 years, she thought very hard about her dreams compared to her skills. She decided to apply to nursing school and graduated when her child was 8 years old. She created her purpose, and began to fulfill her purpose.

* No one can tell you what your "sense of purpose" should be, but sometimes, we can look for it rather than waiting for it to come by itself.
