The abbreviation e.g. means 'for example', and is short for the Latin exempli gratia.

EXPLANATION AND EXAMPLE OF USAGE:

"The English language uses many Latin words and abbreviations of Latin words. e.g.

  • ad nauseam - 'to a disgusting degree' [Latin literal meaning 'to sickness']
  • e.g. - 'for example' [abbrev for exempli gratia]
  • etc. - 'and the rest; and similar things; and so on' [abbrev for et cetera, or etcetera]
  • i.e. - 'that is' [abbrev for id est]
  • viz. - 'namely; that is to say; in other words' [abbrev for videlict 'it is permisssible to see]

One of the earliest and most significant factors contributing to the Latin elements of the language of the English was doubtless the work and works of Christian missionaries from Europe who visited the British Isles in the the 6th and 7th centuries."
