"The Pearl" by John Steinbeck is a simple look at the complex issues brought by colonialism and the impact of greed on ill prepared populace. Rather than new wealth making his life better, the potential of wealth wreaks havoc on the protagonist, Kino's, life.
It can be viewed as a comedy because the ending is optimistic and it can be viewed as a tragedy because Walter Lee lost the money they were gonna use to help Beneatha go to college and for Walter to start his business.

"The Great Gatsby" is actually written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, not John Steinbeck. The main themes of the novel include the corruption of the American Dream, the emptiness of wealth and materialism, and the clash between old money and new money. It also explores themes of love, morality, and social class.

It is about the same as that in stories of the Hope Diamond. Greed and sudden money are not cure-alls.
Money :) Money, money, money. And changes in law and government. Also, in salaries and taxes and rents and pensions, as these are the sources of majority of strikes. And many other things, but they're minor.
Kino is the round character in The Pearl because he goes from family oriented to greedy (wants money from the pearl).
