The root particle "olig" means "more than one, usually more than three, but not nearly all". For example, the ancient Roman Republic was properly described as an "oligarchy" when the Senate was the sole primary authority. Another example of an oligarchy is the medieval Republic of Venice, or the Conclave of Cardinals when selecting the Pope.

An oligopoly is a market with only a few suppliers. The only other word I know using this root are chemical terms. "Oligomer", which means a chemical substance made by reactively condensing a few molecules that are capable of independent existence but also of reacting with one another, and "oligosaccharide", a special form of sugars.
