Rien means 'nothing' or the negative form of 'anything' depending on the context.

For example,

-"Qu'as-tu fait" (What did you do?)

-"Rien." (Nothing.)

or

-"Je n'ai rien fait." (I didn't do anything.)

Note that rien is used in the place of 'pas' and is one of the many forms of the negative in French (e.g. ne...rien, ne...aucun, ne...personne).
