WARNING: SPOILERS. ** ** Spoiler: at the end of Firewing, Goth kills Shade's son, Griffin, and goes through the tree. Shade then sacrifices his life for Griffin and Luna. They all go through the Tree and return to the living world, Griffin and Luna as their former selves and Shade as an omniscient spirit living in harmony with the forest. Goth also returns to the jungle alive.

By Kenneth Oppel. There are three in the series and one standalone so far: Silverwing, Sunwing, and Firewing are all about Shade and his various friends/relatives. The fourth, Darkwing, is set in prehistoric times and features gliding bat ancestors known as "chiropters," one of whom, Dusk, learns how to fly. There will probably not be another book about Shade, due to the ending of Firewing. It is possible but unlikely that the author might write another standalone like Darkwing. If you liked this author's writing, he has also written Airborn, Skybreaker, and Starclimber, which feature human characters and are for a teenaged audience rather than children.
