How did the coal tradition start?

The tradition of teaching children that they would receive a lump of coal in their stockings if they were bad, began in Norway. In Norway, Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) is a Catholic Bishop accompanied by an enslaved blackamoor named "Zwarte Piet" (Black Peter in English). Complete with black woolly hair, and Al Jolsen style black-face, he is doomed to lug Santa's bag of presents as his personal elfin slave (played by children in black-face). As the legend goes, if a child has been bad, zwarte Piet will reach into his back and grab a coal and permanently turn the white child black. You can search the web for images of zwarte Peit that range from the comical to the occultic. The tradition continues as part of Nordic Christmas celebration today in the greater part of Europe, and post Colonial Central and South America, and much of the Caribbean.

Who are 'black scots'?

Dubh means black in the language of the Scots and Irish. There was supposedly a King of Scotland - Kenneth Dubh that some say was of dark complexion. Others say there were many warriors from North Africa that were in Scotland that were in alliance with the highlanders ( Moors or Blackamoor) The story of Othello could be included in this. We may never know if Dubh meant dark as in North African or came from another source. For example the surname Black comes from Blacksmith as does the the surname Smith. In the United States there is a tendency of people with dark complexions from either Latin America or African decent to claim they are Black Scots or Black Irish in order to explain their complexion and deny their true heritage. If Kenneth Dubh is of African decent then it is ironic that these Americans are also claiming African decent. DNA studies in Ireland show links between Spain and France (Basques and Bretons)."The Longue Duree of Genetic Ancestry: Multiple Genetic Marker Systems and Celtic Origins on the Atlantic Facade of Europe, Oct 2004" A Harvard University Study of the Irish (10,000 males) also showed they were almost universally pale skinned where their skin was unexposed to the elements.

What specifically was Ludwig van Beethoven's ethnicity?

Although born in Germany, Beethoven's family originated from Flanders, which had been occupied by Spain for 200 years, with many Moors (North Africans). Contemporaries described the musical genius as having "thick, bristly coal-black hair," a "flat, thick nose," large mouth, and what is described as alternately a "ruddy" or "swarthy" complexion. In the middle of Teutonic Germany and Austria, he must have made a striking, memorable presence. Beethoven's teacher, Haydn, was often called a "blackamoor." Alexander W. Thayer, one of the foremost authorities on Beethoven says, "Beethoven had even more of the Moor in his features than his master, 'Haydn.'" His features and family's Flanders heritage led him to be known as "the Black Spaniard." (see http://www.mdcbowen.org/p2/sf/faq068.htm) It's most likely he was mulatto, but DNA evidence was inconclusive. According to the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A25895-2000Oct17 The research team also said that future DNA analysis might answer lingering questions about Beethoven's ethnicity. As a young man, the dark-complexioned Beethoven sometimes was called "the Moor," and some historians have questioned whether he had African blood. Walsh said his analysis of the hair strands showed "no wrinkles or bends" typical among people of African descent, but that more tests may be conducted.
