An independent clause is a simple sentence that is correct by itself.

Examples:

I ride the bus.

He wrote a story.

A dependent clause is not correct by itself and is usually attached to an independent clause.

Example:

Although I was sick, I went swimming. (The part before the comma is the dependent clause and the part after is the independent clause because it can be a sentence on it's own.)

An independent clause it a set of words that by themselves are a complete sentence. For example, "when i killed him." A dependent clause needs an independent clause to be a compllete sentence, thus it is 'dependent' on the other clause. "but they did not find out ", is a dependent clause. Put the two clauses together and you have a sentence: "when i killed him, they did not find out."

A complex sentence with two dependent clauses.

A sentence is complex when it contains at least one dependent clause, but it can contain more than one. An example of this would be:

"After Tom had written in his journal and after he had taken a shower, he went to sleep."

Both "After Tom had written in his journal" and "after he had taken a shower" are dependent clauses because they do not express complete thoughts, while "he went to sleep" is an independent clause, since it does express a complete thought.

Can a subordinate conjunction make an independent clause into a dependent clause?

This question is somewhat ambiguously phrased, because independent and dependent clauses are mutually exclusive categories, and a clause that is introduced by a subordinate conjunction is not independent by definition. However, substituting a coordinating conjunction in a independent clause by a subordinate conjunction can convert an initially independent clause into a dependent clause.
