Assimilation commonly means the inclusion of a person of a different culture into the culture of where they are currently living. Assimilation programs were and are still used heavily during times when Immigration numbers are highest. The purpose of such programs is to adjust immigrants to the different culture they would experience in the US, as well as instill a sense of patriotism in their new home.
