An epic tale is a literary work in which a heroic individual, often acting on behalf of a larger community, undergoes exciting adventures and faces terrifying, powerful opponents. These opponents are frequently supernatural, such as dragons and monsters, and the hero may be severely wounded and ultimately killed by one of his enemies. For example, Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic featuring a strong, daring hero who protects his people against a monster, the monster's mother, and a dragon; the latter ultimately kills him. Magic, seductive women, treasure and enchanted objects may play roles in these tales.
