The conflict in a story is the central struggle the main character has, either with another character, society, nature, or something else. Plot is the narrative of how the conflict arises and is either overcome or overcomes the main character.

The conflict is the problem of the story or the struggles between opposing forces (often characters). The exposition is the background information that includes setting or where the story or book takes place, what year it is and who the characters are. The plot can be compared to the technical use of the word story (different from story in short story). Story is everything that surrounds the conflict and the conflict's resolution. The plot includes all of the events and how those events are organized by the author to tell the story. For example the story of Oedipus Rex (Oedipus the King), a play written by Sophocles, really begins with Oedipus's birth to the king and queen and then the oracle's prediction that the baby will grow up to kill his father and marry his mother, but the play, and hence the plot, does not start until Oedipus is already an adult and now the king of Thebes.

What does Resolution mean in the plot diagram?

Plot is a complex term that involves a conflict at its core. Something that disturbs the harmony of the characters or the universe or something. It is this conflict that is resolved. And as the conflict gets resolved so to does the plot. For example the protagonist is in danger of being stabbed to death by the antagonist. This is a conflict. This conflict plus all the action that takes place because of that conflict is the plot. When the protagonist convinces the antagonist that he truly loves her and everything that she heard about him to the contrary were lies and hyperbola and she drops the knife and falls lovingly into his arms - this is the resolution to the conflict and thereby the end of the plot as anything that happens after that is only gratuitous sensuality.
